Later this month I am hosting a public meeting where any Barnsley Central residents can come and discuss why they are disillusioned by politics and politicians. The event is particularly aimed at those who do not generally vote in elections.

This is a chance to find out why some people are disillusioned with the political system and choose not to exercise their democratic right to vote. If you’re never voted in past elections, or feel that politicians could do a better job, this is your chance to have your say.

I genuinely want to hear why people feel disconnected from politics. I became an MP to ensure that ordinary people’s voices are heard but I can only do this effectively if I know what my constituents’ view are. I want to ensure that the people of Barnsley Central feel part of the political process and that they know someone is standing up for them, raising the issues which matter to them.

Only this week I was out on the doorstep talking to people in Kingstone. I found it really useful listening to their concerns about Barnsley – and more widely, what they think of politicians, both locally and nationally. It’s only by having honest conversations with local residents that I can be an effective MP, representing their views and campaigning on the issues which really matter to them.

The event takes place at 7pm on Tuesday 27th August 2013, in Room 1 of the Town Hall in Barnsley. It is part of a series of ‘People’s Politics Inquiry’ events which the Labour Party is running across the UK.
