Why I am standing to be the Sheffield City Region Mayor
The challenges posed by austerity, Brexit, and ever widening inequality means this election comes at a crucial moment for South Yorkshire.
With the right leadership, we can attract global investment, become a place with an inclusive economy, and develop a workforce with the skills to succeed. And with the right policies, the Sheffield City Region can become a place where every child gets a good start in life, where men and women are treated with respect and earn decent and equal wages, where everyone has an affordable home, where all of us have dignity in retirement, and where we look after our environment.
To do this our first mayor must build a political consensus that draws together the talent across all our cities, towns and villages - not just in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, but right across Yorkshire. And in doing so demonstrate the practical value of democratic socialism in a way that not only serves the working people of our communities, and offers them hope of a better future, but stands as a shining example to others.
But to do all that we need a mayor with the ability to lead on the national stage, work with our Labour leadership, cooperate with other mayors, and ensure the Tory government gives our region the investment and powers it needs. If you place your trust in me, I will be a Mayor that delivers for you and your family, and together we will change things for the better.
