As Shadow Justice Minister for Youth Justice, on Wednesday 19th November I had the pleasure of speaking at the Youth Justice Board's annual convention in Telford. The event brought together youth charities, justice experts and Youth Offending Teams from across the country.

I spoke about the new challenges in youth justice, about the Government's ill-thought through approach, and Labour's ambition to stop youth crime before it starts by tackling the issues that destabilise the lives of all our young people.

On Saturday 1st November I was delighted to speak at a special 'Stories from Conflict' event in Oldham, reflecting on the First World War as part of of the local council's 'Oldham Remembers' programme.

On Tuesday 28th October the House of Commons held a debate on our Coalfield Communities and the legacy of the pit closure programme during the 1980s. Labour forced the debate as part of our Justice for the Coalfields campaign.

A great number of MPs applied to take part in the debate and regretfully I wasn't called in time to speak before the debate had to end. If I had been, this is the speech I would have made.

On Wednesday 22nd October I spoke to a parliamentary reception, hosted by the Heritage Lottery Foundation, on commemorating the First World War. I was joined by historian Dan Snow and Andrew Murrison MP, the Prime Minister's special representative for the centenary commemorations.

Thank you for inviting me to speak to you today.

Let me begin by saying what a pleasure it is to be here, and to meet so many people from your important organisation.

Work – its existence or absence – helps define a person. If we are lucky, it brings in enough to pay the bills. But if we are truly blessed we have work which we enjoy, maybe even a calling, a vocation.

Today, Dan Jarvis MP, has challenged George Osborne for failing to set out any vision for the families of Barnsley in his last four budgets.
