Dan has continued to push the Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson, to deliver on youth level sport participation in the face of budget cuts and the scrapping of targets.
Dan has championed the approach of the Newham-Barnsley Partnership since his election victory on March 3rd, and praised the sporting and cultural link forged between Barnsley and the Olympic borough of Newham.
Dan explained: ‘This link will make the 2012 Olympic Games a truly national event with a lasting legacy for the young people of Barnsley.’
The Partnership allows young people from Barnsley the opportunity to visit the Olympic Park in Stratford, with young people from East London visiting the open spaces of South Yorkshire.
Speaking in the House of Commons recently, Mr Jarvis said, ‘Without the Newham-Barnsley Partnership, London 2012 would be having little impact in my constituency. Would the minister look at ways of using the example of the Newham-Barnsley Partnership as a means of increasing youth level participation in sport?’
The minister simply replied ‘yes’.
Afterwards Dan revealed, ‘This is a great Barnsley success story, and I take from the minister’s reply that the Barnsley example will lead Britain in pushing youth levels of participation in sport.’
