Dan Jarvis - Do your bit to ease pressures on our NHS
Tomorrow marks the end of the first week in Tier 3 lockdown for Barnsley and South Yorkshire. On the news this week, I saw a chart that illustrated Coronavirus figures in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. Our four local authorities were in the top five places; Barnsley’s infection rate of 545.6 was the highest in the region and has continued to rise this week. This is one league table where we do not want to be at the top.

Dan Jarvis - We've all got to do our bit to beat Coronavirus
We are entering a new phase in our efforts to overcome the Coronavirus. The Government have introduced a three-tier alert system to identify risk levels in each local authority area and new restrictions for those areas of greatest risk. Following extensive discussions with Ministers, local council leaders and I have agreed with Government that South Yorkshire will move into Tier 3, the ‘Very High’ alert level for Coronavirus restrictions. The restrictions will come into force from 00:01 on Saturday 24 October and cover all four local authority areas – Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Dan Jarvis - South Yorkshire Flooding Summit
Last week, I led a Parliamentary debate on flooding preparation in Yorkshire, where I set out the plight of the residents of Lundwood, Fishlake and Bentley that were battered by last November’s floods. I’ll never forget the harrowing scenes of visiting Lang Avenue – as I’d done so often in the past – and seeing residents who had had their homes damaged, their possessions destroyed and their hopes of a peaceful Christmas washed away. Nor will I forget the pain of an 83-year-old woman, who had only recently lost her husband, as she contemplated the prospect of her family home under water and her home insurance cancelled through no fault of her own.

Dan Jarvis - We can all do our bit to prevent a second lockdown
Like everyone, I’m deeply concerned by the rising number of Coronavirus cases we have seen recently. Here in South Yorkshire, the rate of infection (‘R’ rate) has roughly doubled and is heading in the wrong direction – fast. We’ve already seen large parts of the North East, North West and West Yorkshire subjected to local lockdowns. This week, the Prime Minister announced additional measures on home working, pub closing times and tightening up the ‘Rule of Six’ on socialising to get the ‘R’ rate back under control. The situation, both locally and across the country remains incredibly precarious. Without concerted action, we risk sleepwalking into a second Coronavirus peak and national lockdown – putting tens of thousands more lives at risk and causing further disruption to our daily lives.

Dan Jarvis MP - Organ Donation Week
In last week’s Barnsley Chronicle I read the deeply moving and heart-breaking story of Joe Dale, the young lad who tragically died from a severe asthma attack in June 2017. Joe had just finished his GCSEs and had his whole life ahead of him when he died. As a parent, it is unimaginable to contemplate the pain and grief that Joe’s mum and dad, Jon and Helena, have endured over the last three years. Out of the tragedy of Joe’s death, it is hugely heartening that three more lives have been saved because his organs were donated. Three more people have been given hope and the chance of a longer, healthier life. Three families have been spared the pain that Jon and Helena – and all of Joe’s family – have endured.

Dan Jarvis - Results Day 2020
Results Days are invariably moments of great anticipation and trepidation. Nerves about what will be contained in the long-awaited envelope. Relief if results have gone the way you hope; a mad dash through insurance choices if they have not. Excitement about what the future will bring. Hasty preparations for an evening of celebration or commiserations..! They are always a maelstrom of emotions and never fail to take me back to my own GCSE and A-Level results. I would like to congratulate everyone who got their results last week and my thanks go to all of our incredible, hard-working local teachers who have done a sterling job in the most difficult of circumstances.
